Multivariable generalised predictive control (GPC) for anaesthesia : A clinical evaluation

1998
This paper describes research work involving simultaneous control of unconsciousness via blood pressure monitoring as well a muscle relaxation. The multivariable model has been elicited via a combination of literature surveys and clinical experiments conducted in hospital. The multivariable version of GPC in its basic form as well as its different extensions conducted in hospital. The multivariable version of GPC in its basic form as well as its different extensions to include model following and observer polynomials is outlined. Following an extensive simulation study (which is not reported here), the multivariable GPC algorithm was then transferred to the operating theatre where a number of successful clinical trials were conducted on patients undergoing surgery which required relaxation and anaesthesia. The results obtained are analysed and discussed and conclusions with regard to the overall study are drawn.
