Progresses of the influence and mechanisms of autoantibodies

2015
Autoantibodies are immunoglobulins produced by the immune system that are directed against the individual's own proteins which are located in, on the surface of or outside the cells. Their production is one of the most significant characteristics of autoimmune diseases. Previous studies have demonstrated the pathogenic effects of autoantibodies through participating in the development of autoimmune diseases. Apart from the pathogenic effects, the variable regions of some autoantibodies have catalytic activities, leading to the hydrolysis of substrates, such as nucleic acids or proteins. Other autoantibodies possess therapeutic potential. Therefore, to clarify the roles autoantibodies play and the corresponding underlying mechanismsare extremely significant. Key words: Autoantibody; Cell damage; Catalytic enzyme; Cell regulation
