Chronic Meprobamate Intoxication

1962
THERE have been many reports of acute meprobamate toxicity1 and adverse reactions to the drug,2 including several deaths, usually suicide.3 However, chronic intoxication has not been reported in children, who seem to be remarkably tolerant to this agent. Large doses have been given to children only over short periods, since marked ataxia usually results.4 Case Report G.K., an 11-year-old boy, was admitted to the Children's Hospital Medical Center for the 1st time for evaluation of abdominal pain and neurologic changes. A stiff right knee and shoulder had developed 2 1/2 months previously, with a negative orthopedic examination at that time. . . .
