Example of simultaneous numerical solution of the Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes equations

2001
A difference technique is developed for simultaneous computation of the Boltzmann and the Navier-Stokes equations. Numerical results obtained by computing inviscid supersonic and subsonic gas flows parallel to an infinitely thin plate are presented. In the vicinity of the plate, the computation is based on the kinetic theory and is performed through a direct numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation. Away from the plate, the flow is computed by solving the Navier-Stokes equations. The resulting solutions are matched on a rectangular contour encompassing the plate.
