Smartphone application for heart rate monitoring

2017
The progress in mobile technology has changed many aspects of our lives and there is a great scope to harness the potential of mobile devices in order to improve some aspects of society, including the healthcare system. In this paper, we describe in detail the prototype of a smartphone application, which can be able to automatically alert the emergency department when abnormality occurs in a supervised patient. The proposed application will receive heart rate input from Apple Watch and patient information (e.g., name, current location, health condition, medical records) from the smartphone. When abnormal heart rate occurs, the application communicates over the Internet with a remote server accessible by physicians who are in charge of remote patient monitoring. By these means, a structured system for collection of health data and near real-time monitoring of patients can be achieved.
