THE BENEFITS OF AN EFFICIENT ROADWAY REFERENCING SYSTEM

1989
The objectives of any roadway database system is to facilitate the collection, organization and storage of data. To accomplish this task, an efficient location reference system is needed. In this paper, the researchers discuss the components of a location reference system and specifically highlight the advantages of the location reference system implemented in dROAD. dROAD is a relational database software package which enables a roadway agency to integrate all their roadway data in one system in a micro-computer environment. A method for integrating various kinds of roadway data by storing all the location reference data in one central file is presented. The procedures and calcuations required to integrate the various kinds of data are explained and illustrated. The paper also discusses the problem of data redundancy and how it is solved through various techniques inherent in the design of the location reference system's central database file.
