A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to examine the prevalence severity predisposing factors physical and psychological consequences of domestic violence among married women living in Karachi Pakistan. Additionally the paper also assesses their behavioral responses towards domestic violence. An interview was conducted among the 150 married women attending the outpatient department of private primary care center tertiary care government hospital and the community health center of a private tertiary care hospital. About 34% of the participants had experienced physical abuse 39% verbal abuse 37% sexual abuse 64% economic abuse and 94% psychological abuse at some time in their lives. 41% of the physically abused women had been slapped 37% had been kicked and 39% had been hit during pregnancy. The most common physical consequences suffered by these women are sore muscles and sprains in which 23% require medical help and 2% need surgery. Moreover physically and verbally abused women were more likely to belong to low-income groups; married to men of low educational status; and of violent disposition. Women who were depressed were 7.4 times more likely to have been physically abused 13 times more likely to suffer a high level of psychological abuse and 15 times more likely to be verbally abused.
