This paper points out that the refractory industry in Germany since 1924 has used a mixing technology that was newly available at the time and superseded the preparation by kneaders and mullers. Because this mixing technology - called counterflow mixer at that time - had been invented and was manufactured in Germany, companies in Germany and the neighboring countries were the first ones to use it. Thanks to the new and, compared to kneader and muller, most advantageous mixing technology, it was possible to develop and manufacture new refractory materials. Over decades, European manufacturers have gained a head start that has enabled companies to this day to occupy top positions worldwide.
