Introducing Aggregation-Induced Emission to Students by Visual Techniques Demonstrating Micelle Formation with Thin-Layer Chromatography

2020
This laboratory experiment visually demonstrates the advanced scientific concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) using hands-on learning methods. The experiment is divided into two parts: the first period consists of synthesis and isolation of the organic compound 2(TPA-O)-TPE using typical organic chemistry lab techniques; the second period focuses on visual demonstration of AIE properties based on micelle formation and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). By introducing a scientific concept through a classic technology, students can build on the foundation of prior understandings and experiences toward engaging new ideas. This experiment is suitable for many areas of chemistry, especially for organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and materials chemistry.
