The effect of glucose deprivation on the functioning of a dissociated hippocampal culture neural network has been studied. We have observed an enhancement of spontaneous bioelectrical activity during short-term glucose deprivation and an abrupt irreversible decrease of bioelectrical activity, intensification of free radical oxidation and imbalance in the lactate/glucose ratio after it. Application of BDNF (1 ng/ml) in the culture has been found to reduce dramatic consequences of glucose deprivation caused by the deficiency in the energy substrate. The effect of BDNF was manifested in the normalization of the bioelectric and metabolic activity of the neural network of the primary hippocampal culture both during glucose deprivation, and in the distant recovery period.
