Modeling and control of energy storage system in a microgrid using Electromagnetic Simulation Program (ESP)

Increasing renewable penetration and deployment of microgrids have the potential to completely change the way the power systems are being operated today. In order to address these emerging challenges, new simulation tools need to be developed to study the influence of renewables, microgrids, distributed generation resources, and the interaction among them. Towards this end, China Southern Power Grid (CSG) developed a new Electromagnetic Simulation Program (ESP) using the state-of-the-art high performance parallel computing technologies. One well-known concern with renewables is the challenge it caused to the voltage control. The intermittent and random nature of renewables cause the voltage to fluctuate in a much more frequent and faster manner, which is difficult to solve with the existing infrastructure. A novel control approach using energy storage system is proposed to solve such issues. This paper presents the modeling of various distributed generators within a microgrid and demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm using this newly developed ESP, through which the advanced features of the software is also showcased.
