THE GOODS AND THE BADS : SENSING MOVING VEHICLES' AXLE LOAD

2000
This paper focuses on the issue of measuring the dynamic loading that is created through the passing of a vehicle's loaded axle. It describes how quartz weigh in motion (WIM) sensors are being used to measure the real-life loadings on the road structure. Measurement is achieved by combining the piezoelectric properties of quartz and the electronic amplification of the signals that are generated whenever a loaded axle passes over the load-measuring sensors.
