Academic achievement and adolescent status in class

2009
The results of numerous studies at home and abroad indicate that there exists a positive relationship between academic achievement and sociometric status of secondary school students. The present study tries to investigate the existence of the relationship between academic achievement and sociometric status of secondary school students in the class. Participating students (277) completed a questionnaire with academic achievement measures and sociometric test which was used to determine sociometric status in the classroom. A comparison between boys' and girls' results was made. Pearson's linear correlation was used to check the coefficients of correlation between all variables. Pearson's linear correlation coefficients between examined variables were checked for boys and for girls separately. The results indicate that there is a relationship between academic achievement and sociometric status for the whole sample, but they imply the existence of differences in results for the subsample of the boys (N=98) and the girls (N=179).
