Social Work Students’ Acceptance of Afrocentricity Into The Social Work Curriculum

2014
Despite the increased attention that has been given to the Afrocentric world view as a framework for social work practice, very little attention has been given to infusing the Afrocentric world view into the social work curriculum. For social workers to comply with the spirit embodied by the principles of social justice, it is incumbent upon the profession to at least understand and appreciate a world view (e.g., Afrocentricity) that promotes social justice. The purpose of this study is to determine social work students’ level of acceptance of Afrocentricity into the social work curriculum. The study utilized an exploratory, survey methodology. Although only a few variables were found to be statistically significant in the bivariate analyses, the findings of the study are a significant step in advancing the discussion of the Afrocentric world view as a part of social work education and practice.
