Effect of collapse trigger mechanism on the energy absorption capability of GFRP tubes

2020
The aim of this work explores the effect of device triggering on glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) circular tubes.FRP tubes were compressed axially onto a device with 3 mm radius fillet and four pre-crack which is cut by saw of 2 mm deep which were distributed evenly at the lower end of each GFRP tube, the tube wall split pivotally and the splays outward. Tests showed that this system brings about a long steady load. A mathematical equations are introduced which effectively predicts the quantity of load applied. This investigation considers intra laminar fracture energy, friction between GFRP tube and device material, flexural strength and dimensions of tubes and device.
