Qualitative research on patients' perception of patient safety

Objective To investigate and discuss patients' understanding and awareness of patient safety protection.Methods A total of 34 patients who have been recently discharged from hospitals were interviewed through semi-structured in-depth interview method and the data of their cognition of patient safety were collected.Results The theme of patients' perception of patient safety was drawn and parsed out 3 categories,including patients' perception of patient safety concept,patients' perception of patient safety events and patients' perception of patient safety protection.Conclusions Even recognizing the objective existence of medical risks in hospital care,patients are inclined to psychologically escape from facing them.While patients'perception of patient safety events is subjective and influenced by their experiences at hospitals.So it is necessary to establish a safety guarantee system which both doctors and patients participate in.
