Design Analysis of Formula Student Car Front Wing

2021
In this paper, the initial design and analysis of the formula SAE car’s front wing are described. A numerical investigation was carried for a front wing of a Formula SAE car used in circuit racing. Validation was carried out on Selig S1223 aerofoil to compare the computational results with the experimental results. Later on the inverted multi-element wing is taken to study the downforce created by it. Single and multi-element aerofoil was designed and simulated to find the optimal angle of attack for which the maximum coefficient of lift and downforce is generated. The front wing is designed to generate maximum downforce (negative lift) to achieve better top speed and also will have an effect during fast cornering. The overall effect of this Front wing on a Formula SAE car’s performance is then predicted in various dynamic events held at formula student competitions. The simulations were carried out using a commercial CFD code ANSYS-Fluent-18.1.
