The area of applied physiology concerned with work (which includes sports physiology) is closely related to environmental physiology. In recent years the environmental factors with which the organism must cope have become more varied, and work must more often be done unter difficult environmental conditions — in extreme climates, at high altitudes (e.g., air and space travel), and at great depths (in mines or underwater).
