Treatment of readily prepared lactam-fused benzothiazines (III) with a large excess of sodium methoxide in methanol unexpectedly gives indolo-1,4-benzothiazepines (V) instead of the expected 4,5-dihydro-1,4-benzothiazepines (VI).
