PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC.Ira S. Kuperstein, Newark College of EngineeringDr.M.C.Li, New York UniversitySome of the most severe traffic andtransportation problems occur in, and aroundthe central business districts of our urbanareas. The results of these problems in-clude delays, congestion, accidents, con-fusion, and discomfort, combined with avariety of other equally undesireableeffects. In the process of obtaining anddesigning solution devices and developingtechniques to plan for, and respond to, theseproblems and situations, it is necessary toobtain and analyze several types of data.Information is obtained about the usersof the street network, as a major part ofthe overall data collection process. Theresults of the studies are used to evaluateexisting conditions, describe fundamentalaspects of road user behavior in the move-ment system, and to develop and judgealternatives in the solution design process.A variety of study methods and tech-niques have been developed to obtain theinformation required by the engineer, analyst, and planner. Included in the rangeof possible studies, there currently existsa catagory that has been developing rapidly, and has significant promise for additionalfuture applications. These studies utilize
