An Extended Range Multi-Modulus Divider with Seamless Switching at Extended Division Boundary

To solve the division failure problem in conventional extended range Multi-Modulus Divider (MMD), a modified architecture is proposed in this paper. Utilizing extended 2/3 divider cells with additional reset ports and auxiliary multiplexers, the architecture can achieve frequency hopping seamlessly at the extended division boundary. To verify the architecture, a 7-stages modified MMD including two extended stages is implemented in 0.18µm CMOS process. And it can provide a division range of 32–255 with operation frequency up to 4GHz. It consumes 4.4mA current with a 1.8V supply and takes an area of 0.176 × 0.052 mm2'.
