Experimental study on verapamil in treating hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury.

1999
Objective To explore the protective effect of verapamil (VP)in treating hepatic ischemia and reperfusion injury(HIRI).Methods Using a HIRI model in 30 rabbits, the different effects of VP on several parameters which included glutamate pyruvate transaminase(GPT)、glutamate oxaloacetate transminase(GOT) activites in the plasma and xanthine oxidase(XO) activities and malondialdehyde(MDA) contents in the plasma and liver tissue as well as hepatocellular changes morhologically were observed during HIRI.Results GPT、GOT and XO activities and MDA contents all increased very significantly( P 0 01),and there were obviously abnormal changes of liver cells morphologically during HIRI;VP adminisrered before ischemia, but not after ischemia, could obviously ameliorate the unnormal changes of parameters as above( P 0 05 and P 0 01),meanwhile unnormal changes of liver cells morphologically were remarkably alleviated. Conclusion VP administered before ischemia could effectively protect the liver frorm ischemia and reperfusion injury.
