Spectrophotometric methods for the determination of ebastine in tablets

A simple and precise second derivative UV spectrophotometric method (A) and colorimetric method (B) were developed for the estimation of ebastine in pharmaceutical dosage form. The λ m a x of ebastine is found to be 253nm. The second derivative spectrum shows well resolved trough from excipients. Colorimetry is based on the formation of orange-red coloured chromogen with formaldehyde and concentrated sulphuric acid which has absorption maximum at 537 nm. Linearity for these methods lie in the concentration range of 4-24 mcg/ml and 20-100 mcg/ml respectively. The proposed methods are sensitive, accurate, reproducible and useful for the routine determination of ebastine in tablets.
