Kinetic study on lithium-aluminosilicate (LAS) glass-ceramics containing MgO and ZnO

2014
Abstract Magnesium oxide and zinc oxide are widely used to reduce batch cost and increase the working range for the production of commercial Li 2 O–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 (lithium aluminosilicate), LAS, glass-ceramics. However, little work is done on the crystallization kinetics of the glass-ceramic containing MgO and ZnO. In this work, an investigation was conducted to study the crystallization kinetics using non-isothermal and isothermal methods by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and high temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD), respectively. Both non-isothermal and isothermal methods confirm a bulk crystallization mechanism in the glass-ceramic. Activation energy values of 373 and 442 kJ/mol were determined using a modified Kissinger model and the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kohnogorov (JMAK) model, respectively.
