This article reviews the origins of anesthesia for infants and children, the past and current interdependence of pediatric general and cardiovascular surgery, neonatology and pediatric anesthesia, the contributions of pediatric anesthesiology to pediatric critical care medicine and pain management, and the important role modern pediatric anesthesiology plays in children’s health care.
