The graft copolymerization of N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone onto carboxymethyl cellulose and its application for controlled release of water-soluble levofloxacin

2020
The N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-grafted-carboxymethylcellulose was synthesised by employing a free radical polymerization method in an N2 atmosphere. It was found that 0.661 g concentration of monomer was sufficient to afford the maximum grafting parameters viz. % grafting (%G), % efficiency (%E) % Add on (%A) % and conversion (%C), but these grafting indicators showed a decreasing trend with increasing the concentration of monomer from 0.661 g to 0.993 g. The prepared graft copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, TGA/DTG, SEM, GPC and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The hybrid of the grafted CMC with the sodium alginate was prepared and used to study the loading and release of levofloxacin drug, about 70% loading of levofloxacin was observed and its 80% release was observed in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) at pH 7.4 & 37 °C in 30 h.
