Moderating Effects of Category of Relationship and Sex on Belief in a Just World, Family Functioning, Personality Type and Codependency

2019
Introduction: Substance-use problems affect not just the residents in the treatment facility but the whole family system. The study considered the family members of the residents in treatment and rehabilitation as the respondents of the study. Specifically, the study looked into the family functioning, personality type, belief in a just world (BJW) and codependency. The category of relationship and sex were considered as moderator variables. Methods: There were 302 respondents in the study from selected public and private drug treatment and rehabilitation facilities in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.  Purposive sampling technique was used in selecting the respondents of the study.  Three self-constructed questionnaires which measured family functioning, BJW, and codependency were utilized in the study.  A standardized questionnaire was used to determine the personality type.  The data were analyzed using SPSS and SmartPLS statistical softwares. Results: The results have shown that the effect of personal BJW on codependency is stronger for mothers than for wife. The study concludes the importance of respondents’ personal conviction as right, fair, and just in experiencing codependency. Discussion: The findings strengthen the collectivistic family-oriented Filipino value in which the family kinship is greatly treasured, prioritized, and loved especially among Filipino codependent mothers for the recovery of residents undergoing treatment and rehabilitation.  The study recommends the strengthening of Family interventions among codependents.
