A method for generating a subsurface fracture network

There is provided a method for generating a network of cracks in a reservoir. The method includes to design a desired fracture network system and to determine required in-situ stresses, to generate the desired fracture network in the reservoir. The method further includes to design an array of holes to change the in-situ stresses in the tension, and then injecting a fracturing fluid under pressure in the reservoir to generate an initial set of fractures in the reservoir. The method also includes monitoring the in-situ stresses in the tension and to modify the in-situ stresses in the stress field. The method then comprises injecting a fracturing fluid under pressure into the reservoir to enhance the initial set of cracks and to generate the network of cracks. Also described herein is a process for the production of hydrocarbons from a subterranean formation is provided in which a fracture network is generated from a production with a single, deviated well.
