Differences intheAnaerobic Lactate-Succinate Production andintheChangesofCellSappHforPlants withHighand LowResistance toAnoxia

1989
Anaerobically treated seedlings ofOryza sativa L.vararborio accumulated intheir shoots moresuccinate thanlactate andcell sapbecamealkaline. Conversely, inTriticum aestivum L.varMEK 86lactate accumulation wasfarhigher thanthat ofsuccinate and cell sapwasacidified. Anoxia clearly induced proton consumption inbothspecies asanimportant meanstoprevent orcounteract acidosis. Otherspecies studied were:Echinochloa crus-gaffi L. Beauv., ZeamaysL.varDeKalbXL75,Secale cereaie L.var primizia andHordeumvulgare L.varrondo. Changes incell sap pHandsuccinate tolactate ratios distinguished resistant from nonresistant species.
