The results of investigations into the changes in uranium shape dimensions, and surface wrinkling under neutron irradiation are presented. Data are presented on the irradiation growth of texture of uranium. It has been shown that the length and diameter changes of textured uranium are a function of burnup and the initial grain size. It has been found that coarse-grained uranium with disoriented structure exhibits a wrinkling which in this metal leads to a substantial increase in the diameter of the specimens during irradiation. Heat treatment results in grain refinement and in a reduced wrinkiing effect. Influence of impurity content and thermal treatment conditions on the grain size was studied. The study of uranium properties under irradiation is one of the major problems in investigating its radiation stability. (auth)
