Epidemiology of stroke in patients with diabetes Epidemiología de la enfermedad vascular cerebral en los pacientes con diabetes

2010
The epidemiological relationship between diabetes and stroke has an evident clinical interest due to the high prevalence of both diseases. Diabetes increases the risk of stroke in younger subjects, and this risk is most prominent in diabetic women. The incidence of stroke in type 2 diabetes mellitus is from 2 to 4 times higher than in the general population. A previous history of diabetes is associated with worse prognosis and higher risk of recurrence in patients with an acute cerebrovascular event. And finally, subcortical stroke (lacunar infarction and ischaemic white matter disease) is significantly associated with diabetes.
