Abstract 17031: Intracoronary Liquid Keratin (Keraplast) Injection Prevents Post-infarction Left Ventricular Remodeling in a Porcine Infarct Model

2016
Introduction: Myocardial infarction (MI) leads to adverse LV remodeling and heart failure. Approximately 50% of MI survivors develop congestive heart failure (CHF) despite rarely suffering another MI. Previous studies have shown that techniques to affect infarct healing can interrupt infarct expansion and limit LV remodeling. Hypothesis: Intracoronary delivery of a keratin-based liquid (Keraplast) to the infarct limits post-infarction LV remodeling. Methods: Twelve Yorkshire pigs (51.5 ± 11.21 kg) underwent left thoracotomy under general anesthesia. An anteroapical infarct was uniformly created in each animal via suture ligation of the distal one third of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) for 180 minutes followed by reperfusion. Each animal received a 5 mL injection of saline (n=6) or Keraplast (n=6) immediately after reperfusion. Short-axis phase contrast (PC) MRI images were obtained at baseline as well as at 2 weeks, and 8 weeks after MI. LV volumes were determined using MATLAB and ITK-Snap sof...
