Calculation of Transmission Characteristics of Smoothly Inhomogeneous Anisotropic Media in the Approximation of Negligible Smallness of the Bulk Reflection: II. Numerical Methods

2003
Practical methods for calculating the amplitude transmission 2×2 matrix of a smoothly inhomogeneous anisotropic medium in the approximation of negligible smallness of the bulk reflection that are efficient for numerical simulation of optical characteristics of liquid-crystal layers are presented. The proposed methods are applicable for considering both uniaxial and biaxial liquid crystals. In the case of a relatively large anisotropy of the refractive indices, which is typical for liquid crystals, these methods ensure a considerably higher accuracy of evaluation of the matrix indicated than do the approximate methods known from the literature-modifications of the Jones matrix method-at approximately the same computing time.
