Simulation-Based Measurement and Program Evaluation: Demonstrating Effectiveness

2021
Simulation is a potentially powerful educational strategy that can address several challenges associated with training and assessing emergency medicine learners. However, to be effective simulations should be rigorously designed, well matched to the learning or research objective, and carefully implemented. The simulation science literature offers evidence-based, practical recommendations to guide the development of simulation-based assessments. Likewise, programmatic evaluations that assess the impact of simulation-based training interventions should be guided by evidence-based approaches to ensure a complete, multi-level understanding of training outcomes. This chapter provides simulation-based educators and researchers a set of assessment and evaluation principles that reflect best practice recommendations to support.
