An Overview of Cognitive Internet of Things

2021
The explosive growth in wireless networking has driven the development of Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud, Fog and Edge Computing over the past few decades. However, even with the rapid growth in the number of IoT device users, existing wireless networking systems face numerous drawbacks such as lack of storage, low mobility and slow data transfer speed due to increased data traffic. Cognitive Radio has been suggested in the literature to improve data transfer speed by allowing the signal to choose the unlicensed spectrum during transmission. This chapter proposes Cognitive IoT devices connected with Fog and Cloud and the concept of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface. Two instances are considered (i) Fog–Cloud computation and (ii) Fog–Fog computation, i.e., to clarify that owing to/due to reduce in the physical distance between the Fog nodes, storage computation will be less time-consuming. For the Cognitive IoT devices and Fog nodes, the simulation results showed that the faster data transfer with low energy usage is possible due to the low transmission power.
