Selection methodology of the optimal cutting technology for dismantling of components in nuclear power plants

2022
Abstract Cutting process is essential for dismantling nuclear power plants (NPPs). The selection of suitable cutting technology for given cutting conditions can reduce the process time, cost and radiation exposure risk. This paper presents a systematic methodology for selecting an optimal cutting technology under various cutting conditions when dismantling NPPs. After determining the performance factors to be considered, we consolidated the quantitative and qualitative performance data of cutting technologies scattered throughout a wide range of literature. In addition, a mathematical evaluation model and the step-by-step process were presented for selecting the optimal cutting technology based on the collected data. Then, several case studies for various performance factors were performed depending on the object material and thickness for dismantling the components of NPPs. The proposed methodology and tabulated performance data provide valuable information to evaluators and help reduce the expenses required for decommissioning NPPs.
