Unsafe injections cause fatal infections.

2000
In the developing world evidence shows that unsafe and unnecessary medical injections are major factors in the spread of viral hepatitis B and C and play a smaller but significant role in the spread of HIV/AIDS and other blood-borne diseases. It has been estimated that these injections may cause 8-16 million hepatitis B infections 2.3-4.7 million hepatitis C infections and 80000-160000 HIV/AIDS infections globally each year mostly in developing countries. Some of the reasons for the continued use of unsafe and unnecessary medical injections include lack of knowledge among both providers and patients inappropriate training for providers scarcity of guidelines for the reduction of such injections and culture. In view of this several recommendations are provided so as to improve injection safety reduce unnecessary injections and increase safe disposal of contaminated injection equipment.
