China in Africa: A call for Makumism in Africa’s development

2015
This article raises more questions than answers. For example, who benefits from the relations between Africa and China? Is the relationship between China and Africa all about business or is it about renewed superpower rivalries? Technically speaking, the scramble for Africa’s resources—be it by the Chinese or others—is business. But, there is also need to question whether it is altruistic as in supporting Africa’s development or merely acquiring its resources. Finally, the article calls for Makumism—or looking outside from inside—as a framework for analysis of this complex relationship ‘model’ as it emphasizes the need to focus on a two-way, mutually beneficial relationship.
