Relation between conditions of synthesis, structure and properties of polyarylene methylenes

A description is given of conditions of synthesis and characteristics of polyarylene methylenes of MW∼2400, prepared by polycondensation of benzyl chloride in the presence of diphenylmethane and Freidel-Crafts catalysts and by condensation of toluene, cumene, m- and p-xylene, durene, diphenylmethane, diphenylethane, diphenyl, naphthalene and anthracene with formaldehyde in acid medium. IR spectra, gel-chromatography and X-ray analysis were used to compare and evaluate the structure and possible types of substitution in the aromatic nucleus of polyarylene methylenes synthesized.
