Recurrent vulvovaginal Candidiasis and plasma Zinc levels

1998
History and Objectives: Due to prevalence of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis effectiveness of fungicide prophylaxis and low levels of Zinc in our population, the present study is conducted in order to find out the relationship between the plasma Zinc levels and recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis infections on female patients referred to Loghman Hakim hospital in 1993. Materials and Methods: A case control study on 40 female patients who had at least three cases of recurrent episodes of definitive vulvovaginal candidiasis infection in one year despite of standard fungicide treatment was carried out. Control group consisted of 40 female volunteers who did not have candidiasis infection and matched for age, number of pregnancies and several other factors. Plasma Zinc levels were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry on both groups and statistical analysis was performed with Chi-square analysis and Odd’s ratios were determined. Results: 2 groups were matched for all influencing factors. Zinc plasma levels were 62±23 and 55±21 ?g/dl (P Conclusion: Due to high rate of recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis infection and Zinc deficiency in our population, it is suggested that in an experimental study the effect of animal protein and Zinc supplement on these patients ought to be investigated. In addition, attention should be given to the possible effect of Iron supplement on the reduced absorption of Zinc and subsequent low plasma Zinc levels.
