Effects of Gradual Respiratory Functional Training on Pulmonary Functions of Patients with Guillain-Barré Syndrome

2011
Objective: To explore the effects of gradual respiratory functional training on the pulmonary function in patients with Guillain-Barre syndrome(GBS).Methods: Thirty-four patients with GBS were randomly divided into control group(n=17) and rehabilitation group(n=17).Patients in the control group were given routine drugs and acupuncture treatment, and cases in the rehabilitation group were given the gradual respiratory functional training in addition to the routine treatment. The pulmonary function detector was used to assess the lung function,6 min walking test was employed to evaluate the motor ability and modified Barthel index(MBI) to evaluate the activities of daily living(ADL) at beginning and 2,and 4 months after rehabilitation. Results: Four months after rehabilitation, the lung function of patients in the rehabilitation group was significantly improved, relative to that before the rehabilitation and in the control group(P0.01).However,the lung function of patients in the control group was deteriorated when compared to that before treatment(P0.05).The scores of 6 min walking test and MBI of patients in the rehabilitation group were significantly higher than those before rehabilitation and in the control group at 2 and 4 months after rehabilitation. Conclusion: Gradual respiratory functional training is helpful in improving the lung function, motor ability, and ADL in patients with GBS.
