Assistive Wearable Technology for Mental Wellbeing: Sensors and Signal Processing Approaches

2019
Assistive wearable technology for detecting experienced stress and recognizing user's emotion has the potential to play important role in enhancing user's mental wellbeing. The wearable device would be able to collect and monitor physiological and behavioral signals through noninvasive approaches and provide visual and haptic biofeedback. In addition, for treatment purposes in behavioral therapies continuous monitoring of physiological and behavioral signals are important. In this paper after discussing about the importance of such technologies and the need for them, we will discuss how stress and emotions have the potential to be recognized ambulatory in daily life through such technologies in real-time manner. The sensors and signal processing approaches which have the potential to achieve such goals are investigated as well. By the end, the comprehensive required features are summarized in order to address the need for assistive wearable technologies for enhancing mental wellbeing in daily life.
