Possible Protective Effects of Scolymus hispanicus L. Extract against Liver Ischemia Reperfusion

2019
The liver is a vital organ for life and has many important tasks. Blood flow must be arrested in order to control bleeding during clinical surgery and ischemia reperfusion injury is unavoidable. Scolymus hispanicus L. (Sevketi bostan) is widely used as food and medicinal purpose in our country. But the effect of S. hispanicus on liver damage is unknown. There were 4 groups (n = 6) in our study: Group I (Control Group), Group II (I/R), Group III (I/R+ 0.8 ml/kg S. hispanicus Extract), Group IV (I/R+ 2 ml/kg S. hispanicus Extract). 45 minutes of reperfusion after 6 hour of ischemia was applied to all rats in Group II, II, IV. ALT, AST and H&E histological analyzes were been performed. According to our study results, ALT and AST values were increased in Group II. ALT and AST values in groups which was applied S. hispanicus extract were nearly closed to Group-II. Group III ALT values slightly decreased. Histological analysis showed that; sinusoidal dilutation, cytoplasmic vacuolization and PMNL infiltration were observed to be high in Group II. Compared to group 2, these results were similar to groups III and IV. These histopathological findings were found to be in line with those obtained from biochemical analyzes. As a result of the study, 2 ml/kg dose of the S. hispanicus extract was observed to be high. And 0.8 ml/kg dose was found to be very little protective against liver IR injury. It was considered that below these doses should be used in future studies.
