Ultrastructure of the surface of the epithelial layer in esophagitis

: Three-dimensional ultrastructure of surface epithelial layer of the oesophagus was studied on biopsy specimens obtained from 10 patients aged 25-55 with various forms of oesophagitis and on one autopsy case of Candida oesophagitis. Common stereo-ultrastructural features of the studied forms of oesophagitis were desquamation, abundance of micro-organisms on the surface and leukocyte migration through the widened intercellular junctions.
