Surgical approaches for total hip arthroplasty

Total hip replacement is a commonly performed procedure. The National Joint Registry for England and Wales identifies the four most commonly used approaches. An understanding of the relevant anatomy, benefits and common complications for each approach is essential core knowledge for all orthopaedic surgeons. In this article we provide an overview of our preferred technique for the surgical approaches commonly used for total hip replacement and the advantages and disadvantages of each.
