Osteoporosis and bone health in diabetes : original

2014
Bone health has never been a specific focus area in the management of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. However, it has become clear that if patients with type 2 diabetes develop complications due to inadequate glucose control, they may have a higher risk of suffering osteoporotic fractures. Similarly, people with type 1 diabetes typically have lower bone mineral density (BMD) and are therefore at an increased risk of fractures. Diabetes-related osteoporosis may be associated with additional comorbidities such as smoking and obesity.
