Comprehensive Analysis of YPLL on Malignant Tumor Deaths in a County of Hunan Province form 2004 to 2005

2009
Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of malignant tumor deaths in the registered population of Anren County in Hunan Province, to assess the impact for "premature deaths" from malignant tumors, and to provide the scientific evidence for control and prevention of malignant tumors. Methods A retrospective survey of death caused by malignant tumors from 2004 to 2005 was performed in the registered population of Anren County, which was based on the protocol of the third national retrospective survey of death. With a graphic method, the impact of different malignant tumors on years of life lost was analyzed by drawing an area chart of the potential years of life lost(YPLL) with an average of the potential years of life lost(AYPLL) for the y-axis and the death toll for the x-axis. Results The mortality rate of malignant tumors was 134.12/100,000,with the standardized mortality rate of 98.26/100,000 in Anren County from 2004 to 2005.Malignant tumor death was the second common cause of death. The top five cancers ranked by YPLL were liver cancer, gastric cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, and brain malignant tumor;and by "average years of potential life lost"(AYPLL) were leukemia, nasopharyngeal cancer, brain malignant tumor, cervical cancer, and liver cancer. In different age groups, the rate of YPLL increased firstly and decreased afterwards and fluctuations existed.YPLL rates of men in each age group were higher than those of women, but the age group of 20~30 years was excluded. Conclusions It is convenient and visual for using YPLL area chart to analyze the disease burden from cancers.Liver cancer and leukemia are the main causes of the life lost in Anren County, and moreover, with a larger number of young deaths.Gastric cancer and lung cancer cause a large number of premature deaths. The premature deaths from brain malignant tumor are relatively fewer, but the age of them is younger.
