Ambulatory continuous intra-arterial infusion

Summary The ideal way to manage the patient requiring infusion is by maintaining him in an ambulatory status. This can be economically accomplished by the use of a small electrically driven pump and a combination of power sources. While the patient is in bed at night and intermittently during the day, the motor is powered by a transformer of 5.8 volts attached to the wall power. When the patient is ambulatory during the day, a 6-volt dry cell is used to permit complete ambulation. A variety of pumping speeds are available, but we have found that a satisfactory infusion can be obtained by using 350 ml. volume per day. There is no doubt that small quantities of infusate can be used and in some cases are desirable.
