At the present day, main methods to prevent blindness in patients with diabetes mellitus are retinal photocoagulation and vitrectomy. But these treatment methods have serious side effects. Therefore, during many years, a there is a search for means to prevent and treat diabetic retinopathy, which would have been less traumatic. Taking into account that lipid storage diseases are one of the risk factors of diabetes type 2 late complications development, it is possible that the correction of dyslipidemia may be one of the priorities. Data received as the result of high scale studies allow to assume, that fenofibrate use may slow down diabetic retinopathy progression and decrease the necessity in laser treatment.
