Determination of dry density ratio of compacted soils using sand replacement method

2018
Soil compaction is a significant procedure in any road construction to evaluate the degree of compaction in the field. A method for determining dry density ratio at compacted soils was proposed and tested. Sand replacement method was utilized to evaluate the field density directly on compacted soils at site. Analysis was facilitated by using frequent measurements of bulk density and water content of the compacted soils. This test involved the use of sand pouring cylinder to determine the bulk density, indirectly measured the dry density ratio which indicates the compaction percentage. Result from the field testing at different layering using compaction roller indicates that the dry density ratio provide accurate estimation of the ratio at the site. This is substantiate in this study by small differences of dry density has been obtained which is less than 10% of the standard acceptance in the design of conventional geotechnical engineering.
